EBay is an international online auction company and offers many types of currency, including the U.S. dollar, the Euro, Swedish Krona and Australian dollar. One of the more unusual currencies is the Vanuatu vatu, abbreviated as VUV. It’s the official currency of Vanuatu, a small island nation located in the Pacific Ocean about 1,000 miles east of northern Australia.

Vatu History

The Vanuatu Vatu is a relatively new type of currency, having been introduced in Vanuatu in 1982. Prior to its introduction, Vanuatu used the Australian dollar and the New Hebrides franc as currency. Vanuatu introduced six coin denominations in 1983 and a seventh coin denomination in 1988. Four banknote denominations were introduced in 1982. Currently, the vatu is available in seven coin denominations and five banknote denominations.

Vatu Exchange Rate

The vatu, 2 vatu and 5 vatu coins are composed of nickel-brass. The 10 vatu, 20 vatu and 50 vatu are made of Cupro-nickel, and the 100 vatu coin is made of nickel-brass. Vatu coin sizes vary depending on the value. The 1 vatu coin is 16 mm in diameter and the 100 vatu coin is 23 mm in diameter. The exchange rate is about 92 vatu to 1 U.S. dollar, 90 vatu to 1 Australian dollar and 124 vatu to 1 Euro. The Reserve Bank of Vanuatu issues the coins and banknotes.

Vanuatu is an archipelago located in the south Pacific Ocean. Europeans first came to the island in 1605, and by the 1880s both France and the United Kingdom lay claim to the country. The Republic of Vanuatu achieved its independence in 1980 and created its own currency in 1982. There are little over 220,000 people living in Vanuatu.

EBay Currency

The eBay Developers application programming interface includes a CurrencyCodeType token for converting currencies for different customers. For converting to VUV, the GetItemStatus, GetShippingCosts and GetSingleItem calls are used. VUV is the standard 3-letter currency code set for eBay, but it’s currently not a valid code. It may be for a future use.
