Ingredients
Split black gram (urad dal) 1 cup
Chopped onion 1 Tsp
Red Chili 3 medium broken pieces
Mustard seeds 1/2 Tbsp
Tamarind paste 1/2 Tsp
Chopped cilantro 1/4 cup
Asafoetida 1/4 Tsp
Oil 2 Tbsp
Salt 1 Tbsp or to taste
Method
1 - Wash and soak the dal for 15 minutes.
2 - Heat the oil in a pan, add the soaked dal and fry till it browns lightly.
3 - Add the onion, asafoetida, tamarind, red chillies, mustard and salt and fry well till the mustard seeds pop for a few minutes. Cool and keep aside.
4 - Put the dal and onion mixture and the cilantro into a blender. Add 1/4 cup of water and grind to a coarse paste.
5 - Now pour the seasoning over the chutney. Mix well. Refrigerate and use as required
